Laser hair removal is the process of permanently removing unwanted hair by means of exposure to pulses of laser light that disable the hair follicle. It had been performed experimentally for about twenty years before becoming commercially available in the mid 90's and has advanced rapidly since then.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

This varies from person to person due to skin type, hair type, age, individual hair cycles, hormones and other factors. The average person needs 8 treatments to achieve desired results. If any additional treatments are needed after completing your initial 8 treatments at Nova Beauty Bar, we will place you on a very small touch up fee to clean up any remaining hair.

Why do I need multiple treatments?

Hair grows in repeating cycles, and only in the Anagen (actively growing) phase can the root of the hair follicle be targeted. This is because the hair is only attached to the root in this phase, the energy absorbed by the pigment in the hair shoots down the shaft and essentially kills the root, taking away its ability to produce a hair. Hairs in the Catagen(resting) and Telongen(shedding) phase can not direct the energy to the follicle because the hair has detached from the root.

At each appointment all of the hair follicles with actively growing hair will be effectively treated. A few weeks later, some of your follicles  in the Telogen stage will have moved  back into the Anagen stage, and you will come in for a treatment to disable those. As this cycle gets repeated, you experience increasing reduction of hair.

After a full series of treatments some clients experience a minimal amount of new hair growth, sometimes dormant follicles will start producing a hair for the first time due to a shift in hormones. Clients who experience this can come in for a 'Touch Up' treatment once or twice a year (or whenever necessary) for only a fraction of the price they paid for their initial treatments. Please contact for more information about our touch up program.

How Far Apart Should My Treatments Be?

Hair cycle length varies depending on body part. Generally you can expect your first four few treatments to be 4-6 weeks apart, and last four appointments to be 6-8 weeks apart. Some people choose to or may be recommended to wait longer between appointments depending on many factors. Clients who follow the timeline that is recommended to them by an experienced technician based on their own individual factors generally see better results with less treatments.

This can easily be achieved with 3-4 treatments instead of the full course of treatments.

Am I A Good Candidate For Laser Hair Removal?

If the surrounding skin is lighter than the colour of the hair, the energy of the laser is concentrated in the hair shaft, effectively destroying it without affecting the skin. The greater the contrast between the skin and the hair; the easier it is for the laser to target.

You may have heard  before that Laser is only safe and effective on light skin with dark hair, this would be referring to older technology (which is still being used in some establishments). At Naturalase we have seen excellent results with individuals of all skin and hair types, as long as the pigment in the hair is darker than the skin, it is treatable. (Unfortunately white or very blonde hair is not treatable).

The Shedding Process:

the shedding process usually starts about 10-14 days after your treatment. Before this it may appear that your hair is still 'growing', this is because the treated hair needs time to detach from the treated root and be pushed out of the follicle. All hair should shed within about 3 weeks following the treatment. Exfoliating in the shower can help this process along. After 3 weeks, some patients may see small black dots remain in the hair follicles on some areas. These are commonly referred to as 'pepper spots', which eventually shed on their own.

Does It Hurt?

You may experience a minimal amount of discomfort, many clients report that it is much more tolerable than waxing. Some say the feeling resembles a rubber band snapping against the skin. Discomfort is only felt while laser is hitting the skin and does not last.

There is the option of using an over the counter numbing cream for small areas that may be more sensitive, most often used for the Brazilian area.

Some of the earlier lasers delivered painful pulses. If you have been treated with one of these devices and now fear a similar experience, please note that the technology in the industry has come a long way in the past few years, in terms of effectiveness as well as comfort. Please scroll down for more information about our state of the art equipment.

Are There Any Risks? Side Effects? Down Time?

Most people experience no side effects, though a few may exhibit some short-term local reddening.

There is minimal to no downtime, many of our clients pop in during their lunch break and head back to work immediately after.

Rare side effects such as scabbing, bruising or temporary change in pigment are indicative of inappropriate laser type and/or settings for the individuals skin type.

How Should I Prepare For My Treatment?

Patients should not wax, epilate, or remove hair with the root or use any other hair removal method besides shaving for at least 6 weeks prior to their first session and throughout their course of treatments.

There needs to be a hair in the follicle in order to properly target the follicle.

The area to be treated should be shaved the evening prior or morning of your treatment, so that the energy is targeted towards the hair follicle and not wasted it on the hair above the skin’s surface.

For optimal results, on the day of your treatment, avoid wearing lotions, makeups or deodorants on the skin of the area to be treated. Please avoid extreme sun exposure or tanning beds and discontinue use of self tanners 2 weeks prior to your treatment.

How much does it cost?

The cost of laser hair removal varies depending on the size, complexity of the area treated.

at Nova Beauty Bar we strive to provide effective, safe & quality service while maintaining competitive prices: please see our price list tab for more.

What Kind Of Equipment Do You Use?

Hair removal at Nova Beauty Bar is powered by the revolutionary Naturalight IPL System, manufactured in the United States by Focus Medical, both FDA and Health Canada approved. Focus Medical systems are setting the new standards of speed, safety, and efficacy, in the removal of even minimally pigmented hair colours, and all skin tones including tanned skin. Results using the conventional optical only systems are limited because they operate indirectly by superheating the melanin in the hair shaft and hope for enough collateral thermal damage. Focus medical Systems achieve superior results because they precisely target and destroy the hair follicle through a process known as Vortex Heating. IPL advantages translate to enhanced patient comfort, convenience and satisfaction.
